Daeodon lived in North America during the late Oligocene through the early Miocene, approximately 29 to 19 million years ago. Although often nicknamed the "hell pig" or "terminator pig," it was neither a true pig nor a close relative of modern swine. Instead, it belonged to the extinct family Entelodontidae.
Standing as much as 6 feet tall at the shoulder and weighing over 1,000 pounds, Daeodon possessed one of the largest skulls of any land mammal of its time. Its massive jaws, crushing teeth, and prominent bony cheek flanges made it well adapted for an omnivorous diet that likely included meat, carrion, roots, and other plant material. Its size and strength allowed it to dominate many prehistoric ecosystems.
