Ring-tailed lemurs are found only on the island of Madagascar and are easily recognized by their long, black-and-white banded tails. Unlike many mammals, their social groups are female dominated, with females leading the troop and maintaining the group's hierarchy.
Wild populations of ring-tailed lemurs have declined dramatically because of habitat loss and other human pressures. Recent studies estimate that only about 2,000 to 2,400 remain in the wild, making them one of Madagascar's most threatened and recognizable species.
