Stegosaurus lived during the Late Jurassic Period approximately 155 to 150 million years ago in what is now western North America. It is instantly recognizable by the two rows of large plates running along its back and the four long spikes at the end of its tail, collectively known as the thagomizer, which it likely used for defense against large predators.
Despite reaching lengths of about 30 feet, Stegosaurus had a relatively small head and fed primarily on low-growing plants, ferns, and shrubs. Although the exact function of its back plates remains debated, they may have helped regulate body temperature, aided in species recognition, or served as visual displays during courtship and defense.
