Allosaurus lived during the Late Jurassic Period approximately 155 to 145 million years ago and was one of the dominant predators of its time. Reaching lengths of around 28 feet or more, it hunted large herbivorous dinosaurs such as Stegosaurus and young sauropods. Its name means "different lizard," referring to the unusual shape of its vertebrae when it was first described.
Allosaurus possessed a large skull filled with sharp, serrated teeth, powerful hind legs built for speed, and muscular forelimbs equipped with three large claws for grasping prey. Fossil discoveries suggest it was an active predator and possibly an opportunistic scavenger, making it one of the best-known and most extensively studied theropod dinosaurs.
