Troodon was a small theropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous Period approximately 77 to 70 million years ago. Although the name Troodon has become familiar in popular culture, scientists now consider the genus poorly defined, and many fossils once assigned to Troodon have since been reassigned to other closely related troodontid dinosaurs. Despite this taxonomic uncertainty, the animals traditionally called "troodontids" are recognized as small, agile predators with relatively large brains, excellent vision, and feathered bodies.
Troodontids possessed sharp, serrated teeth and a large sickle-shaped claw on each foot. Their forward-facing eyes provided excellent depth perception, and their enlarged brains suggest they were among the most intelligent non-avian dinosaurs relative to body size. These adaptations likely made them effective hunters of small animals while also allowing them to exploit a varied diet.
