King Richard I of England (1157-1199), known as Richard the Lionheart, earned his legendary reputation through his military leadership during the Third Crusade and numerous campaigns across Europe. His personal courage and battlefield skill made him one of the most celebrated warrior kings of the Middle Ages.
The finest medieval warhorses, called destriers, were specially bred for strength, endurance, and the ability to carry heavily armored knights into combat. Decorative caparisons bearing heraldic symbols identified noble riders while protecting the horse from sunlight, dust, and minor battlefield hazards. The lion emblems featured on this figure reflect Richard's association with the royal arms of England and the qualities of bravery, strength, and kingship that the lion represented.
