The Knights Hospitaller, officially known as the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, were founded during the 11th century to provide medical care and shelter for Christian pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. Following the First Crusade, the order expanded its mission to include military defense, becoming one of the most respected military orders of the medieval world.
Recognized by their black surcoats bearing a white cross, the Hospitallers fought throughout the Crusades and later established strongholds on Rhodes and Malta.
