Alligators belong to the crocodilian family and are native to the southeastern United States and eastern China. The American alligator can exceed 13 feet in length and weigh more than 750 pounds, although exceptional individuals have grown even larger. Their powerful tails help propel them through the water, while their armored skin provides protection from predators and rivals.
Young alligators feed on insects, fish, crustaceans, and other small animals before progressing to larger prey as they mature. Their powerful jaws can deliver tremendous bite force, and they often use a behavior known as the "death roll" to tear apart large prey. Although attacks on humans are uncommon, wild alligators should always be treated with caution and given plenty of space.
