Stag beetles belong to the family Lucanidae and are best known for the enlarged mandibles of the males. These impressive jaws are used to wrestle rival males for access to mates and breeding territories rather than for feeding or defense against predators.
Adult stag beetles feed mainly on tree sap and ripe fruit, while their larvae spend several years developing inside decaying wood. Although the large mandibles can make walking awkward, stag beetles are capable fliers and often take to the air when searching for food or mates.
