Pentaceratops is a genus of ceratopsid dinosaur that lived approximately 75 to 73 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period. The name Pentaceratops means "five-horned face," referring to its distinctive cranial features. This herbivorous dinosaur is known for its large skull, which could reach up to 3 meters (10 feet) in length, making it one of the largest skulls of any land animal. The frill, a bony extension at the back of the skull, was adorned with epoccipitals, which are small, bony projections that added to its impressive appearance.
Pentaceratops was a quadrupedal dinosaur, moving on all four sturdy legs. Its body was robust and heavily built, supporting a massive head and frill. The front legs were shorter than the hind legs, giving it a slightly sloped posture. This dinosaur's diet consisted mainly of low-lying vegetation, which it would have cropped with its beak-like mouth and ground with its cheek teeth. The large frill and horns were likely used for display, species recognition, and defense against predators, as well as possibly playing a role in thermoregulation.
