Stegosaurus lived during the Late Jurassic Period and is easily recognized by the double row of large bony plates running along its back and the spiked tail, known as the thagomizer, which it used for defense against predators.
Fossils of Stegosaurus have been discovered primarily in western North America, although related stegosaurs have been found elsewhere. Adults could grow to approximately 30 feet in length and were herbivores that fed on low-growing vegetation.
