PNSO Megalodon Review (Patton #10):

This is the largest and most expensive of the Megalodon toys currently available. As such, it has the quality you would expect in a high end model. Relative to the other Megalodon sharks, this thing is HUGE. While its overall length is only 1.5 inches longer than the second longest CollectA Megalodon, side by side it looks much larger. The girth on the PNSO Megalodon is 9 inches vs. 7 inches on the CollectA Megalodon. While the PNSO Megalodon figure does not have a moveable jaw, the mouth and teeth on this figure are amazing. The other great feature is the swimming motion evident in the figure. With the bent tail, it really looks as if this PNSO Megalodon is travelling through the water. All the details on this figure are quite good.

The biggest drawbacks to this figure are:
1) No moveable jaw - but this mouth is so amazing that it may not be possible to achieve this level of detail in a moveable mouth.
2) Cost. If money is no object, this is the toy Megalodon for you, but at almost twice the cost of the next figure there may be better options for your budget.

Megalodon Shark Facts:

The word "Megalodon" literally translates to "big tooth" and the Megalodon was likely one of the largest and most dangerous predators that ever lived in the oceans. Scientists know that the Megalodon was a massive creature, but exactly how large remains uncertain. The problem is that a complete Megalodon fossil has never been found, so size and appearance estimates are based on fragmentary remains.

Most estimates of the Megalodon's size and appearance are based on fossil teeth. Comparing modern shark tooth data with Megalodon teeth provides an average length estimate of about 35 feet, with maximum estimates reaching up to 65 feet. It possessed powerful jaws with an estimated bite force of 40,000 lbf, enough to crush bone with ease.

At that enormous size, the Megalodon clearly had a major impact on the marine communities in which it lived. Near the top of the ocean food chain, it likely targeted large prey such as whales, seals, and other marine mammals. As the old joke goes, "What does a Megalodon eat?" - whatever it wants. However, it likely faced competition from other large predators, including Livyatan.

The Megalodon lived approximately 25 million years ago. There are many theories regarding its extinction, including ocean cooling during ice ages, falling sea levels, loss of nursery habitats, and declining food supplies.
