The sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis) is the third-largest rorqual whale after the blue whale and fin whale. Adult sei whales commonly reach lengths of 40 to 60 feet and can weigh more than 50 tons. They inhabit oceans around the world and are known for being among the fastest large whales, capable of reaching speeds exceeding 30 miles per hour.
Like other baleen whales, sei whales feed by filtering small prey from seawater. Their diet consists primarily of krill, copepods, and small fish. Instead of teeth, they possess baleen plates that allow them to strain enormous quantities of food from the water. A large sei whale can consume hundreds of pounds of food in a single day.
Sei whales spend much of their lives in deep offshore waters, making them more difficult to observe than many other whale species. Commercial whaling significantly reduced their populations during the twentieth century, and they remain protected throughout much of their range today.
