Stegosaurus was a large plant-eating dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic Period about 150 million years ago. It is easily recognized by the two rows of large bony plates along its back and the four long spikes at the end of its tail, a weapon often called the thagomizer.
Although it had a relatively small brain, Stegosaurus was a successful herbivore that fed on low-growing vegetation. Its heavily armored body and spiked tail helped defend it from predators such as Allosaurus.
