Smilodon was a prehistoric carnivorous mammal often called the "saber-toothed tiger," although it was not closely related to modern tigers. It lived from roughly 2.5 million to about 10,000 years ago during the Pleistocene Epoch. Smilodon belonged to an extinct group of cats called machairodonts and is best known for its extremely long upper canine teeth, which in some individuals reached nearly 7 inches in length. Its body was heavily built with powerful forelimbs adapted for grappling prey.
Fossils of Smilodon have been found throughout North and South America, with especially large numbers recovered from the La Brea Tar Pits in California.
