In addition to the typical walk, trot, and canter/gallop, Icelandic horses have two additional gaits called the tölt and the flying pace. The tölt is a smooth, four-beat gait that allows the rider to cover long distances comfortably and quickly. The flying pace is a two-beat lateral gait in which the horse moves both legs on the same side of its body forward at the same time, creating a fast and exhilarating ride.
