Lonesome George was the last known surviving Pinta Island tortoise (Chelonoidis abingdonii), native to the Galapagos Islands. He was discovered on Pinta Island in 1971 and became an international symbol of conservation and the consequences of species loss.
Pinta Island tortoises suffered severe population declines due to human exploitation, habitat damage, and introduced animals. Attempts to breed Lonesome George were unsuccessful, and he died in 2012 without producing offspring, marking the extinction of the Pinta Island tortoise lineage.
