The pygmy hippopotamus is a smaller and lesser-known relative of the common hippopotamus. Native to the forests and swamps of West Africa, the pygmy hippo is adapted to a life in dense vegetation near water bodies. Unlike the common hippo, which is gregarious and spends much of its time in large groups, the pygmy hippo is more solitary and nocturnal. It is a shy and reclusive animal, often seen alone or in pairs, primarily during the night when it forages for food.

Pygmy hippos have several distinct features that differentiate them from their larger relatives. They have a more elongated body and a proportionally smaller head, with eyes that are less prominent. Their skin is smooth and hairless, similar to that of the common hippo, but is usually darker, ranging from dark brown to black. This helps them blend into the shadowy forest environment. Their legs are relatively longer, which facilitates movement through dense underbrush and allows them to navigate more easily on land compared to the more aquatic common hippo.
