Hippopotamuses are massive herbivorous mammals native to sub-Saharan Africa. They are characterized by their barrel-shaped bodies, short legs, and large mouths equipped with formidable tusks. Though bulky in appearance, hippos are surprisingly agile and can move quickly on land and through water.
Hippos spend much of their time submerged in rivers, lakes, and swamps to stay cool and can hold their breath for several minutes underwater. They feed primarily on grasses and other vegetation during nighttime foraging.
