Axolotls are a type of salamander native to lakes in Mexico, most notably Lake Xochimilco. Unlike most amphibians, they retain their larval features throughout life, including external gills, which allow them to remain fully aquatic. This condition, known as neoteny, is one of their most unusual biological traits.
They are also known for their ability to regenerate limbs, spinal cord tissue, and even parts of their heart and brain. Unfortunately, axolotls are critically endangered in the wild due to habitat loss and water pollution. Despite this, they are widely bred in captivity for research and as exotic pets, helping preserve the species outside its natural environment.
