The White Rhinoceros, also known as the Square-Lipped Rhinoceros, is the largest of the five living rhino species. Native to Africa, White Rhinos are distinguished by their broad, flat mouths, which are specially adapted for grazing on grasses. Adult males can weigh up to 6,000 pounds and stand approximately 6 feet tall at the shoulder.
Despite their name, White Rhinos are gray to brownish in color. The name is believed to come from a mistranslation of the Afrikaans word wyd, meaning "wide," referring to their broad mouths.
