Large freestanding shields, often called pavises, became widely used throughout Europe during the Late Middle Ages. Unlike handheld shields, pavises were designed to stand upright on the battlefield, providing substantial protection against arrows, crossbow bolts, and other missile weapons.
Crossbowmen and archers frequently positioned themselves behind pavises while reloading, a process that could leave them vulnerable to enemy fire. Many pavises included a viewing slit or were tall enough to allow defenders to observe the battlefield while remaining largely protected. During sieges, similar portable shields were also used to shelter advancing troops as they approached walls or siege engines.
