Corsairs were privateers who operated with official government authorization to attack enemy merchant ships during times of war. Unlike pirates, who acted outside the law, corsairs carried letters of marque that granted them legal permission to capture enemy vessels and cargo on behalf of their nation. In return, they were allowed to keep a portion of the captured prizes.
Although most corsairs were men, history records several women who took active roles in privateering and naval warfare. Privateering flourished from the 16th through the early 19th centuries before international agreements gradually brought the practice to an end. The distinction between pirates and corsairs was often significant legally, even if merchant crews viewed both with equal apprehension.
