Yangchuanosaurus was a large carnivorous theropod dinosaur that lived in what is now China during the Late Jurassic Period, approximately 160 million years ago. It was closely related to other large predators such as Allosaurus and occupied the role of a top predator within its environment. Fossils discovered in Sichuan Province reveal a dinosaur with a large skull, powerful jaws, sharp teeth, and a distinctive bony ridge running along its snout. Adults could reach lengths of around 10 meters.
Yangchuanosaurus shared its habitat with giant plant-eating dinosaurs including Mamenchisaurus and Omeisaurus. Its strong legs, muscular tail, and powerful bite made it well suited for hunting large prey. Discoveries of Yangchuanosaurus fossils have helped scientists better understand Jurassic ecosystems in Asia and have provided important information about the evolution and diversity of large predatory dinosaurs long before the appearance of Tyrannosaurus rex.
