Anhanguera was a flying reptile that lived during the Early Cretaceous Period approximately 110 to 115 million years ago in what is now Brazil. Although often grouped with dinosaurs in toy collections, it was actually a pterosaur, a separate group of flying reptiles. Anhanguera had a long narrow beak filled with sharp teeth that were well suited for catching fish. Its large wings allowed it to soar efficiently over lakes, rivers, and coastal environments while searching for prey.
Fossils of Anhanguera have been discovered in the famous Santana Formation of northeastern Brazil. Scientists believe it spent much of its time gliding above the water before swooping down to capture fish near the surface. Its lightweight skeleton, excellent eyesight, and powerful wings made it a highly effective aerial predator. Today, Anhanguera remains one of the best-known pterosaurs and provides valuable insight into the remarkable flying reptiles of the Cretaceous Period.
