Pinta Island Tortoise Information:
The Pinta Island tortoise, scientifically known as Chelonoidis abingdonii, was a species of giant tortoise native to Pinta Island in the Galápagos archipelago of Ecuador. This species became widely known due to its last surviving individual, Lonesome George.
Lonesome George became a global symbol of conservation and the impact of human activity on fragile ecosystems. Despite extensive efforts by scientists to find a compatible mate, no successful breeding occurred. George passed away on June 24, 2012, marking the extinction of the Pinta Island tortoise.
