Beelzebufo ampinga, often dubbed the “Devil Frog,” lived around 70 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period in what is now Madagascar. Estimated to have reached over 16 inches in length and weighing up to 10 pounds, it is considered the largest frog ever discovered. Its wide mouth and strong jaws suggest it was capable of preying on small vertebrates, including possibly young dinosaurs. Related to modern horned frogs, Beelzebufo thrived in a warm, seasonal environment, using its impressive bite and ambush tactics to dominate its ecosystem’s wetlands.
