The Kermode Bear, commonly called the Spirit Bear, is a rare subspecies of the American Black Bear found primarily in the coastal forests of British Columbia, Canada. Its white or cream-colored coat is caused by a recessive gene and is not the result of albinism. Only about 10-20% of Kermode Bears display this unique coloration.
Despite their unusual appearance, Kermode Bears are genetically black bears and share the same diet and behavior. They are an important cultural symbol to many Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest and play a significant role in the region's forest ecosystems.
