Kentrosaurus measures: 5.1" L x 1.2" W x 2.4 H

Kentrosaurus was a cousin of the more well-known Stegosaurus. Both were plant-eating dinosaurs of the Jurassic, but while Stegosaurus had plates on its back and spines on its tail, Kentrosaurus had plates toward the front half of its back, and spines running down the rear half.

Scientific Name: Kentrosaurus ("Prickle Lizard")

Characteristics: Smaller and more lightly built than its more popular cousin, Kentrosaurus was still a formidable foe with its spined back! This Kentrosaurus toy dinosaur figure features a striking bold blue and orange coloration, with highly detailed sculpting to bring out its unique features.

Size: This Kentrosaurus figure measures about 5 inches long and just under 2 1/2 inches tall to the tip of its raised tail.

Kentrosaurus Information:

Kentrosaurus is a genus of stegosaurid dinosaur that lived approximately 155 to 150 million years ago during the Late Jurassic Period. Here are some key points about Kentrosaurus:

  1. Physical Characteristics: Kentrosaurus was a medium-sized stegosaurid, measuring around 4.5 meters (15 feet) in length. It had a distinctive row of large bony plates along its back and two pairs of long spikes on its tail, which were likely used for defense against predators.

  2. Discovery: Fossils of Kentrosaurus were first discovered in Tanzania, Africa, in 1909 by the German paleontologist Edwin Hennig. The name "Kentrosaurus" means "spiked lizard" in Greek, referring to its prominent tail spikes.

  3. Classification: Kentrosaurus is classified as a member of the family Stegosauridae, which includes other well-known dinosaurs like Stegosaurus. It is considered a basal or early member of this group.

  4. Diet: Like other stegosaurs, Kentrosaurus was likely a herbivore, feeding on low-lying vegetation such as ferns, cycads, and conifers.

  5. Defense Mechanisms: The long spikes on Kentrosaurus' tail were probably used as defensive weapons against predators like Allosaurus. By swinging its tail, Kentrosaurus could have inflicted serious injuries on attackers, deterring them from pursuing a potential meal.

  6. Social Behavior: Some evidence suggests that Kentrosaurus may have lived in herds, as fossils have been found in close proximity to one another. This behavior might have provided protection against predators and facilitated breeding and parental care.

  7. Contemporary Environment: Kentrosaurus lived in the same ecosystems as other iconic Jurassic dinosaurs like Brachiosaurus, Allosaurus, and Diplodocus. These dinosaurs inhabited lush, forested environments characterized by diverse plant and animal life.

  8. Paleoecology: The presence of Kentrosaurus in Africa during the Late Jurassic provides valuable insights into the distribution and diversity of dinosaurs on the ancient supercontinent of Pangaea. It helps scientists understand how different dinosaur species were distributed across the globe during this period.
