One major advantage of the hammerhead's head structure is that it provides a wider visual range than most other sharks, which is essential for detecting prey. With eyes set far apart on either end of the hammer, these sharks are able to scan a greater area more quickly, giving them a significant edge in the hunt for food.
Unlike many other shark species, hammerhead sharks tend to be bottom feeders due to their unusually small mouths. Likewise, the ocean floor allows hammerhead sharks to use their uniquely shaped head to pin prey down.
Feeding on a variety of marine animals such as fish, squid, crustaceans, and even other sharks, hammerheads are also known to be cannibalistic, consuming members of their own species when necessary. However, despite their fearsome reputation, these sharks are not considered a significant threat to humans. Most encounters with humans are due to incidental contact rather than intentional attacks.
