Alligators are large reptiles belonging to the family Alligatoridae. The American alligator is native to the southeastern United States and can be found in freshwater swamps, marshes, rivers, and lakes. Adult alligators commonly exceed 10 feet in length, with the largest individuals reaching nearly 16 feet and weighing over 1,000 pounds.
Young alligators feed on insects, fish, snails, and other small prey. As they grow, they expand their diet to include birds, mammals, reptiles, and larger fish. Alligators are powerful ambush predators that rely on stealth, strong jaws, and short bursts of speed to capture prey.
Although rare, white alligators do exist in nature. Most are leucistic rather than true albinos. Leucism is a genetic condition that causes reduced pigmentation while still allowing some normal coloration in the eyes and skin. These animals are exceptionally uncommon and are often found only in protected environments due to the survival challenges associated with their unusual coloration.
