The name "alligator" is derived from the Spanish phrase meaning "the lizard." Adult American alligators commonly reach lengths of around 13 feet and can weigh more than 750 pounds, while the largest recorded individuals have exceeded 15 feet and weighed over 1,000 pounds. They are found naturally only in the United States, China, and Mexico.
Young alligators feed on insects, fish, snails, crustaceans, and worms before progressing to larger prey such as birds, mammals, reptiles, and fish. Their powerful jaws allow them to capture and subdue prey, and they often perform a "death roll" to tear large food into bite-sized pieces. Although attacks on humans are uncommon, alligators may defend themselves if threatened.
