Giganotosaurus lived approximately 99 to 97 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous Period in what is now Argentina. Its name means "giant southern lizard," and it is regarded as one of the largest meat-eating dinosaurs ever discovered. The first major fossil, found in 1993, was about 70 percent complete and greatly expanded scientific knowledge of this enormous predator.
Although frequently compared with Tyrannosaurus rex, Giganotosaurus had a longer, lower skull and a more lightly built body that resembled an oversized Allosaurus. It likely hunted large herbivorous dinosaurs that shared its environment, relying on its powerful jaws and sharp serrated teeth to subdue prey.
