In real life, the fossa (Cryptoprocta ferox) is Madagascar’s largest native predator and looks like a mix between a cat, a mongoose, and a small cougar. Fossas can grow up to about 6 feet long including the tail, though much of that length is their long, muscular tail, which helps them balance while climbing. They have semi‑retractable claws, flexible ankles, and powerful limbs, making them expert climbers capable of chasing prey through the treetops. Their diet is dominated by lemurs, and they play a critical ecological role in controlling lemur populations. Fossas are generally solitary, active both day and night, and are currently considered Vulnerable due to deforestation and habitat fragmentation in Madagascar.
