The Palm Cockatoo, also known as the Goliath Cockatoo, is one of the largest cockatoo species in the world. Native to the rainforests and woodlands of New Guinea, nearby islands, and northern Australia's Cape York Peninsula, this impressive parrot typically grows to approximately 20–24 inches long. Recognized for its smoky-black feathers, spectacular spiky crest, enormous curved beak, and distinctive bare red cheek patches, the Palm Cockatoo can change the intensity of its facial coloring when excited or displaying.
In the wild, Palm Cockatoos feed primarily on nuts, seeds, fruits, and berries, using their powerful beaks to crack open tough shells. These intelligent birds are especially famous for their unusual drumming behavior, in which males use sticks or seedpods to rhythmically tap hollow trees during courtship displays. Often seen alone, in pairs, or in small groups, Palm Cockatoos form strong pair bonds and depend on mature trees with large nesting hollows. Their remarkable intelligence, unusual behaviors, and striking appearance make them among the most fascinating parrots in the world.
