Sciurumimus was a small theropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic period approximately 150 million years ago in what is now Germany. The only known fossil was a remarkably well-preserved juvenile specimen discovered in Bavaria in 2011. Its name means "squirrel mimic," referring to the long feathered tail that resembled the bushy tail of a squirrel.
Scientific analysis suggested that Sciurumimus may have been an early member of the Megalosauroidea, a primitive group of carnivorous theropods. The fossil was especially important because it preserved extensive feather-like structures, providing evidence that feathers or feather-like coverings may have been more widespread among theropod dinosaurs than previously believed. Since only a juvenile specimen has been discovered, the adult size and full appearance of Sciurumimus remain unknown.
